Alfonso VI en Sancho II de Castilla waren de oudere broers van García I de Galicia. Hun vader Fernando I de León verdeelde zijn koninkrijk in drie delen Garcia kreeg Galicia, Alfonso kreeg León en Sancho Castilla.
